Word from the Chair

Welcome to the Suffolk Poetry Society website. In these uncharted times, the Trustees hope that we will all find that our reading, writing and enjoyment of poetry sustains us, and that SPS can provide us all with links that mitigate against the isolation imposed on us. We are probably the oldest poetry society in England, and although only a charity for the last four years, I believe our work to promote poetry and its links with other arts has never been more valuable. As a committee we are keeping in touch via electronic wizardry and hope to exploit those and traditional means to keep in touch with our membership and others who are enlivened by poetry.

For those who have not already heard, and are wondering why there is a new face at the helm, Florence Cox resigned as Chair this year and we thank her wholeheartedly for her untiring work in the role, and hope she enjoys the space and time liberated, albeit I suspect she was not expecting to be quite so free of other responsibilities in the short term!

In the absence of nominations for the Chair, I have accepted the role for the coming year and thank all those at the AGM (which, in the last hours of freedom, managed to be quorate) who voted for me. Since that meeting, Lynne Nesbit, who has been active in supporting the society since she joined a couple of years ago, agreed to put herself forward as a Trustee, and as allowed in our constitution, the Committee has co-opted her. Her position will be ratified at the next AGM.
