Soon you will forget
How traveller’s-joy, roses and may
Lined this part of the way,
A barricade thick and rich
As that which twined and crept
Upwards for a hundred years
While a girl waited and slept

But when snow comes
Sifting thinly across,
You may remember
How, somewhere here,
The road used to seem kinder;
And a bird heading home
When the loaded truck was gone,
Hovered, baffled by the space,
Before flying on.
