Doorways

by Fran Reader

She searched for her special door.
She knew it would be yellow
surrounded by a turquoise lintel
that carried a silver knocker
shaped like a hummingbird.
She found a solid oak door
with a knocker like a lion’s head,
a flaky paint door with a bell pull
and even a plastic door with a buzzer
that played the first bars of Colonel Bogey.
She found a glossy green door,
with stained glass panels that she fancied
would play coloured light
into a sunny hallway but
it carried no bell or knocker.
So she stayed home and complained
of the draft from the open door
behind her.
