Wild Man of Orford – Lizzi Thistlethwayte

George Crabbe Poetry Competition 2025 – 1st Prize

Adjudicator: Elizabeth Cook

Brent geese were on the wing when we heard
such a queer-thin sound running fled,
out of a wept place, found him caught in a net
off Blackstakes, we plugged our ears
at his woundsong, and when a small blue flower
called 'audacity' tore from his heart the Ore
flared crimson and he was gone, his soul a burst
of herrings, and our own stupid fright, loud
as sea-clatter, as sea went bonkers and swept wham
bam back in for her man, overwhelmed us.
