Joy will be thine, so runs the age old truth,

If thou wilt breed a son and plant a tree;

And Shakespeare tells that this thy golden youth

In childhood”s eyes will ever live for thee.

The cedar”s noble limbs o”erspread the air

Emblem of living strength no gale can bend:

But child and tree outgrow thy loving care,

Then might”st thou wish the Muse had been thy friend.

If fair words come to thee on youth”s full tide,

Close not thy mind, nor send the Muse away;

But cherish them, and leave thy door so wide

That he may enter on thy winter”s day

      And touch thy brightest words with gentle wing

      So that they fall into their place, and sing.
